Acupuncture is believed to stimulate your central nervous system which, in turn, releases a cascade of neurochemicals into targeted parts of your body, triggering your body’s natural healing response. There are many schools of thought to explain how acupuncture works, but the evidence is clear that it can have a profound impact on physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health.

Research by institutions such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH) shows its benefit for conditions ranging from fibromyalgia and osteoarthritis to addiction, asthma, and anxiety.

      What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese therapy that seeks to restore energy flow throughout the body to relieve pain and stress. This energy, or Qi (“Chi”), circulates through the body along pathways known as meridians. Acupuncture stimulates this energy and removes blocks so that the Qi can flow freely and energize all the areas of your body. If Qi is not flowing freely or is out of balance (excessive or deficient), the body is vulnerable to illness or disease. When acupuncture needles are placed at specified points on the skin, energy is redirected and prompts a healing response.

Are There Safety Concerns with Acupuncture?

Acupuncture has been in practice for a few millennia with an incredible safety record. Minor side effects may include minimal bleeding, bruising, or soreness in the areas where the needles were placed. The risks of acupuncture are extremely low, especially if you have an experienced, certified acupuncture practitioner using sterile needles. Since single-use disposable needles are now the industry standard, the risk of infection is marginal.

      What Conditions Does Acupuncture Treat?

Acupuncture is a very popular and effective treatment for many conditions, including:

      Treating With Acupuncture

Acupuncture treatments typically involve weekly or biweekly treatments, with a course consisting of up to 12 or more sessions. The course of acupuncture treatment that follows will vary with everyone.

Once a patient assessment is complete, one of our physicians will instruct you to lie down on a table (either facing up or down) and will insert small, single-use, disposable needles into your body where it is determined most effective. Your acupuncturist will then dim or shut off the lights, as you prefer, and will allow you to rest with the needles for approximately 20 minutes. This is your time to rest and feel the effects of the needles as they take hold.

The results you experience from acupuncture will vary according to individual factors like age, genetic background, as well as lifestyle, health, and environmental conditions.

      Our Treatment Philosophy

Here at Water’s Edge, we always design our treatment processes specifically with the patient in mind, empowering them with the tools to help the body heal itself. Our practitioners begin by getting to know patients on a personal level. After asking the appropriate questions, both the patient and practitioner work together to discover the perfect formula to balance the hormone system, alleviate discomfort, and restore vitality and health.

What to Expect in Your Session

At Water’s Edge Natural Medicine, our naturopaths have years of experience and can help address a variety of emotional, mental, and physical health conditions with acupuncture. The first visit will also include an exam and assessment of your current condition, which may include a questionnaire that you and your naturopath discuss. We may ask you questions about your sleep, appetite, bowel movements, and current emotional state, all to understand what areas of your life would benefit from treatment.
